By the Decade Reading Challenge

The goal of the challenge is to read books from as many consecutive decades as possible. My goal is to read 15 books published in 15 consecutive decades in 2007. You don't have to choose that many books, though! In fact, my original goal was 10 books in 10 consecutive decades, but I realized my 2007 TBR list made it easy for me to go ahead and do 15.

Rules:
1. First, there will be a prize--a book of your choosing from Amazon.com that is priced $15.00 or less. Only one (well, possibly more) prize(s) will be given. [Edit: I did draw particpants' names from a "hat" for Buy a Friend a Book Week. Joy was the winner, and she chose Watership Down. ]

2. You may choose the number of books you read. If you read 4 books in 4 consecutive decades, you will have 4 chances for the prize. If you're really ambitious and read 18 books in 18 consecutive decades, you will have 18 chances for the prize. Books may be read in any order!

3. Books read for other challenges are totally acceptable. Almost all of mine are cross-posted with other challenges.

4. This is meant to be a fun challenge. Most of us are reading fools and have so many challenges going on. Don't let this one stress you out. Most could probably muster up at least 3 or 4 books for it without even trying.

5. The challenge lasts from January 1 through December 31 of 2007. Any book you've read this year will count for the challenge. However, you must sign up for it by midnight ET on June 30, 2007. If you're later than that you can still participate, but you won't be eligible for the prize. All you have to do to sign up is comment on this post. Please comment leaving a link to your tentative list. You may change this list at any time. I will have another post for you to comment on at the end of the year to see how you did.

A good source to find out when books were published is wikipedia. For example if you follow this link, you will see how easy it is to search books by a particular decade.

My list for this challenge is here and on the sidebar. You may use one of the buttons below. Or, if you're creative and have already made a button, feel free to use it as well.

I hope I've answered everything. Let me know if there's something I've missed, and have fun reading!

Oh Dear!!!! LOL! Okay, I'm signing up...I've picked 6 books (6 decades). Do we need to read these in order of the decades? Or can we read them in any order we want? I'll list them on my blog later today.

You may read them in any order!

Great to see ya!

Just saw the challenge over at A Reader's Journal and couldn't resist joining. I have six titles up, though I'm hoping to add more later -- ideally, to work through the rest of the 20th century. Current list is at http://minutemarginalia.blogspot.com

I forgot to mention...thanks to your list I was able to fill in the 1900's. I couldn't find anything of interest. :)

Just found out about this from Backcountry Muse. My goal of reading all (or at least as many as I can obtain) of the Newbery Medal books will fill in nine decades, and I'm sure I can find something to stretch it out a little further. Do I need to post a definite list now, or can I just fill it in as I go?

3M said...

rm1, You can fill in as you go or change any book at any time!

Okay. Here's my tentative list of 17:

Hello there! I don't know how I stumbled upon this, but I am definitely in! I just made a quick page: http://twentytwo22.wordpress.com/bythedecade/

The main page is something I have been working on where I am trying to read 22 books before my 22nd birthday at the end of July. I started this personal challenge on April 24th, which gives me a total of 94 days. Check out my FAQ for more info! I'm excited for both of these challenges!

I'm game for a challenge. Decided to do all non-fiction for this one and go back to 1800. Here's hoping for the best!

Hi, there. I just want to add my name to the participants. My lists can be found here: http://tropicalmarginalia.wordpress.com/reading-through-the-decades-challenge-list/

Thanks for doing this. I think I'll enjoy doing this challenge. :)

I just found this challenge (as new to blogging), and I can't resist--even though is halfway through the year already. You mentioned earlier that these can be books that we've already read *this* year...is that right??

I'll post my list either today or tomorrow.

Best,

Trish

Coming up with a list was much easier than I thought!

You can find my list here:

Since its already June, I'm not sure if I'll be able to go even further...but we'll see.

Hi

I realize I'm a little late to the game but is it still possible to sign up? I'd love to do 10 books.

Also, can I use books I've already read this year to count towards the ten?

frenchmade said...

I am so excited about this. What a great idea to read through the decades! Please put me down for 20 books. I look foward to reading everyone's reviews!!

I've listed my books on my blog.

Thanks for this challenge!

This is like three for one! I homeschool our three children, also, and we are all going to participate together. I'm posting for my two youngest one because they don't have a blog (yet). The oldest one has already joined and left you a comment! Thanks for a fun challenge that will give us something "academic" to focus on for the summer. So, here goes:

I will put myself down for 12 books. You will be able to find my list, for KathyinDC, here:

www.knitbacks.blogspot.com.

A list for "Attorneyback" will be at the same blog, for 20 books.

And a list for the littlest one, as "PinkBalletToes", also at the same blog, for 15 books.

I have been working on my own 20th Century Challenge (100 books by 100 authors) for a couple of years but am beginning to flag. This challenge will provided a much needed boost to get me back on track.

The full list of my 20th century challenge can be found here:

http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?tag=C20+challenge&view=LizzySiddal

I intend reading one from each decade between now and the end of 2007.
